Installing BBEdit
---------- ------
This section explains how to install BBEdit in your system. It also explains in
detail what files BBEdit creates, where they’re placed, and how to install
optional parts of BBEdit.
Basic Installation
----- ------------
BBEdit consists of the following major components:
• The BBEdit application itself
• The “BBEdit BBalloons” file
• The “BBEdit Extensions” folder
• MPW Shell tools and scripts required to support ToolServer
• The XTND system file and XTND translators
When you expand the StuffIt archive which contains the BBEdit distribution, or
insert your BBEdit floppy, you’ll see a window which contains the components
of BBEdit.
Only the BBEdit application file is required to use BBEdit. All other components
can be installed, or not, at your discretion. For example, if you’re putting
together a minimal working disk for use on the road, you may not want the full
suite of extensions, you may not need to use ToolServer, and you may have no
requirement to import foreign file formats.
If you’re planning to install the whole set of BBEdit files, such as extensions
and Balloon Help, create a “BBEdit Folder”. Copy the BBEdit application, the
“BBEdit BBalloons” file (if you’re using System 7), and the “BBEdit Extensions”
folder into your BBEdit Folder. When you’re done, your BBEdit Folder will look
something like this:
Note: Balloon Help is not available in System 6, so there is no benefit derived
from installing the “BBEdit BBalloons” file. You can save about 15K of disk
space by not installing this file.
For BBEdit to use the installed extensions, the BBEdit Extensions folder must be
in the same folder as BBEdit, as illustrated above.
BBEdit Extensions
------ ----------
The “BBEdit Extensions” folder contains code modules which add additional
functionality to BBEdit. Inside the “BBEdit Extensions” folder is a folder
called “Sources”, and a file called “Writing BBEdit Extensions”. As shipped, the
BBEdit Extensions folder occupies about 125K of disk space. If you’re not
planning to use any extensions with BBEdit, you can save this space by deleting
the BBEdit Extensions folder altogether. If you’re not planning to write
extensions for BBEdit, you can save about 100K of disk space by removing these
items from the BBEdit Extensions folder and deleting them from the disk
containing your BBEdit folder.
ToolServer Support
---------- -------
If you’re planning to use BBEdit with ToolServer, first make sure that your MPW
and ToolServer are correctly installed. As of this writing, ToolServer is only
available as part of Apple’s ETO (“Essentials, Tools, and Objects”) CD-ROM
subscription; the latest version of ToolServer is 1.0b3, found on ETO #8.
APDA is on the verge of releasing ToolServer as a separate product, so
for up-to-date information contact APDA: 1-800-282-2732.
Your BBEdit distribution includes a folder called “ToolServer Support”. This
folder contains the following folders:
• Copy to MPW folder: Drag the items in this folder into the same folder as
your ToolServer application.
• Copy to MPW Tools folder: Drag the items in this folder into the “Tools”
folder that’s in the same folder as the ToolServer application.
• Copy to MPW Scripts folder: Drag the items in this folder into the
“Scripts” folder that’s in the same folder as the ToolServer application.
Once you have dragged the items to the appropriate places in your ToolServer
folder, delete the “ToolServer Support” folder.
Claris XTND Support
------ ---- -------
If you will be using BBEdit to import and export word processor files, you need
to install the contents of the “XTND Folder” that comes with BBEdit:
If you’re running System 7, drag the “Claris XTND System” file and the “Claris
Translators” folder to the Extensions folder that is in your active system
folder.
If you’re running System 6, drag the “Claris XTND System” file and the “Claris
Translators” folder to your active system folder.
There is no need to restart your computer after installing the XTND support
files.
Note: If you already have an application installed which uses the Claris XTND
translators and there’s already a “Claris Translators” folder in your System
Folder or Extensions folder, then there’s no need to use the “Claris
Translators” folder that comes with BBEdit.
Warning: If you’re using System 7, make sure that there are no “alias loops” in
your Extensions folder. An alias loop occurs when you have an alias in your
Extensions folder that points to another folder (such as your Control Panels
folder), and in that folder, you have an alias that points back to your
Extensions folder, thereby creating loop. In these circumstances, the Claris
XTND software will hang or crash your machine when you start up BBEdit.
BBEdit Files
When you launch BBEdit for the first time on your system, it creates the
following files:
• BBEdit 2.2 Prefs. This file contains settings and default preferences for
various parts of BBEdit. This file resides in the appropriate place in your
System Folder: if you’re using System 7, the file will be placed in the
Preferences folder in your active System Folder; if you’re using System 6,
BBEdit will look for a folder named “Preferences” in your active System Folder.
If it finds a Preferences folder, the BBEdit Prefs file will be placed there;
otherwise, the file will be placed in the System Folder itself.
• ToolServer Worksheet. The first time you use ToolServer with BBEdit, this
file will be placed in the same location as the BBEdit Prefs file.
